New Mother’s Mental Health and Ayurveda’s Role
Mrs Su Bowerman, of Ayurveda Mother and Infant (AMI), is a practicing Ayurveda Doula since 1986, when she trained in USA, Europe and India. She has been a member of Doula UK since 1999, and has worked with some of the grandfathers of the Natural Childbirth movement, like Dr. Frederick Leboyer and Dr. Michelle Odent, and with grandmothers like Penny Simkin and Ysha Martha Oakes
Su’s most requested expertise is in post-partum care because this is the “Black Hole” of modern medicine, according to doctors throughout the Western world. In today’s world 85% of all new mothers experience some kind of post-partum depression, from ‘baby blues’ to postnatal depression to full-blown Post Natal PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). Western medicine has not satisfactorily confronted this problem.
Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine and health, has viable answers that work in this modern world. Mothers who take the AMI programme report they sleep better, the baby sleeps through the night, a decrease of colic in their baby, having an ample breast milk supply, feeling strong and energetic, and a plethora of other sought after symptoms of being a happy new mother.
