Environmental Dance

A Photography book

After completing a Masters degree in Computer Science at IIT Mumbai, Sam Kumar started his career with a Global IT company. As a part of his job, he lived and worked in US, UK, Holland, Australia, Dubai and Singapore for over 15 years. When he returned home to Chennai he shifted to his first passion – Photography and Film making. In 2010 he founded Mirage Film Institute which offers training for Film making, Photography and Media.
Initially his interest in photography were limited to Nature and Landscape. Since he loved watching dance performances, he developed a keen interest in Dance photography.
In 2010, he started a unique photography project, ‘Environmental Dance’, which combined his two passions – Nature and Dance. He photographed dancers in graceful movement in outdoor locations such as forests, mountains, parks, temples and monuments. He worked with18 international dancers from Holland, US, Japan, Singapore, Thailand and India. The images were captured in multiple locations in India, Singapore, Bali and Thailand over a period of 10 years.
Sam Kumar held 4 solo exhibitions of his Environmental Dance photos in Singapore, Thailand and India. In February 2021, he published his first photography book ENVIRONMENTAL DANCE.

ANITA RATNAM

ANITA RATNAM

Dancer/Choreographer – Transcultural Collaborator – Arts Presenter -Scholar/Writer – Cultural Activist
With a career spanning 4 decades and with over 1500 performances in 27 countries, Anita is one of India’s most recognized dance icons.
“I am in dance because this is my own way of connecting with myself and the world.  I consider myself a contemporary classicist.
All my ideas are from traditional sources, but they can also be from readings and from nature: a lotus flower floating in a small brass vessel, a child blowing soap bubbles, even a piece of paper flying in the wind gives me inspiration.
I call myself a cultural activist because I believe in my culture. My culture doesn’t mean just the performing arts. To me it stands for finding out about my roots and knowing who I am. And the classical arts are a very vital part of our culture.
I want to make a difference to the cultural life of India, as a performer, thinker and activist
