Never miss a Sunday

Why this episode

Nine nights that honour the strength in every woman

Navratri means “nine nights”. Across India and the diaspora, families honour the Goddess Durga in her nine forms with prayer, fasting, music and Garba. Our episode falls during Sharad Navratri, the autumn festival that leads to Dussehra.

The Divine Feminine is more than ritual. It is the courage, care and wisdom of the women in our families and communities. Speakers from around the world share stories of inner strength, harmony and positive energy, and how each of us can help build a kinder world. Healing Our Earth has broadcast free every Sunday since April 2020.

Six ways to celebrate Navratri

Simple ways to mark the nine nights at home or in your community, whatever your background.

Hands with red and gold bangles lighting a clay diya beside marigold petals and a rangoli

Light a diya

Light a lamp at dusk and take a quiet moment for prayer, gratitude or reflection. Keep the flame away from curtains and small children.

Evening ritual

A grandmother laughing as a teenage girl spins in a chaniya choli at a Garba night in a community hall

Dance Garba together

Join a Garba or Dandiya night near you, or dance at home with family. It is joyful exercise for every age.

Movement and joy

A grandmother, mother and daughter laughing together on a sofa at home

Honour the women in your life

Call your mother, grandmother, sister, teacher or friend and tell them what they mean to you.

Gratitude

A brass thali with fruit, makhana, sabudana khichdi, yoghurt and a glass of water

Fast with care

If you fast, drink plenty of water and choose fruit, nuts, yoghurt and light meals. If you have diabetes, are pregnant or take regular medicines, check with your doctor first.

Health

A woman meditating by a window at sunrise beside a diya and marigolds

Find your inner strength

A few minutes a day of meditation, chanting or slow breathing can steady the mind and lift your mood.

Mind

A volunteer serving a hot vegetarian meal to an older woman at a community kitchen during Navratri

Give in the spirit of seva

Cook for a neighbour, volunteer at a community kitchen or support a charity that helps women and girls.
