Why this episode
Your heart works quietly. This week it gets some attention.
World Heart Day was on 29 September, and this episode follows on from it. The World Health Organization names cardiovascular disease as the leading cause of death worldwide. It also says most of it can be prevented by tackling tobacco use, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and harmful use of alcohol.
Changes like these add up slowly, and they are easier to keep going with other people. Healing Our Earth has broadcast free every Sunday since April 2020, and this one is about habits you can start the same evening.
Six everyday habits your heart likes
General guidance to get you started. The episode goes further, and your own doctor knows your situation best.
Move most days
Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity a week. Brisk walking counts, and so do the stairs.
WHO physical activity guidance
Fill your plate with plants
Fruit, vegetables, pulses, nuts and whole grains. At least 400g of fruit and vegetables a day, roughly five portions.
WHO healthy diet guidance
Go easy on salt
Keep it under 5g a day, about one level teaspoon. That includes the salt already in bread, sauces and ready meals.

Know your numbers
High blood pressure usually has no symptoms. Ask your pharmacist or doctor for a check, especially if you are over 40.
Ask your local health service
Rest and slow down
Most adults need 7 to 9 hours of sleep. Breathing, prayer, meditation and time outdoors all help a busy mind settle.
General sleep guidance
Leave tobacco behind
Stopping smoking is one of the best things you can do for your heart, at any age. Keep alcohol within your local guidelines.
Free stop-smoking support is widely available
